Spotted Water Hemlock in Bloom Across Ontario Raises Public Health Concerns
Native plant identified as most poisonous weed in Ontario, with sightings reported in multiple regions

Reports of spotted water hemlock (Cicuta maculata L.) in bloom have emerged in various parts of Ontario, including Toronto, Kawartha Lakes, Ottawa, and Kingston. Residents have shared observations of the plant’s presence on platforms such as iNaturalist.org, coinciding with its typical flowering period from June to August.
The Ontario government identifies spotted water hemlock as the “most poisonous of all Ontario weeds.” The plant, native to the province and a member of the wild carrot and parsley family, is commonly found near water sources such as marshes, riverbanks, streams, and swampy areas. Other names for the plant include beaver poison, musquash-root, poison parsnip, spotted hemlock, and water hemlock.
A mature spotted water hemlock displays a strong, green stem marked with purple spots and can reach heights between one and two metres (three to eight feet). Its leaves, which grow near the roots, are characterized by sharply toothed edges with veins extending to the notches between the teeth. The plant features umbrella-shaped flower heads with smaller umbels containing numerous individual white flowers, each with four to six petals. These blooms attract pollinators and serve as host sites for several butterfly caterpillars.
Spotted water hemlock is a perennial species that reproduces both via rootstocks and seeds, the latter of which only germinate after immersion in water. While the plant itself is not classified as a noxious weed in Ontario, a close relative, poison hemlock (Conium maculatum L.), is included on the province’s noxious weed list, alongside giant hogweed and wild parsnip.
The primary danger posed by spotted water hemlock arises from cicutoxin, a highly potent toxin present in all parts of the plant, including the seeds, roots, and stems. Historical accounts, including references from the Cleveland Clinic, note that similar toxins were used in ancient Greece to execute criminals and prisoners, most famously Socrates.
There have been numerous documented cases of sickness and fatalities among both humans and livestock following the consumption of water hemlock. WebMD.com states that the plant is unsafe for ingestion or topical application, and warns that water hemlock poisoning can result in death in as little as 15 minutes.
Symptoms of poisoning typically occur following ingestion and include sweating, vomiting, dilated pupils, excessive salivation or dry mouth, elevated blood pressure, rapid heart rate, confusion, seizures, and muscle weakness. Poisoning is not considered a risk from mere proximity to the plant, but it poses a hazard to livestock and to children who may come into contact with or ingest the plant.
Currently, there is no antidote for hemlock poisoning. Medical intervention focuses on treating symptoms based on severity. Health authorities advise that anyone who suspects they have ingested water hemlock should contact a health-care provider and proceed immediately to the nearest emergency room.
Eradication of spotted water hemlock from private property presents challenges. The recommended method for small patches involves digging out the plant while wearing protective clothing, including a face mask, long sleeves, and gloves, and ensuring that the roots are also removed. Herbicide application is advised in late fall or early spring, but not after the plant has flowered. Mowing is discouraged due to the risk of toxic fumes. Removed plant material should be sealed in garbage bags and disposed of with household waste.
While spotted water hemlock is not included in Ontario’s official list of noxious weeds, the attention from provincial authorities and health experts underscores the plant’s potential risk to public health and livestock safety. The ongoing reports of its presence in urban and rural settings have prompted renewed public information efforts on identification and safe removal practices, especially during its peak bloom period. The plant’s ecological role as a host for pollinators and butterfly larvae is noted, though it is balanced by the significant toxicity and risk it represents.
The emergence of spotted water hemlock in populated regions highlights the importance of public awareness regarding native toxic flora, proper identification, and safe management practices. The lack of an antidote and the rapid onset of poisoning symptoms underscore the need for immediate medical attention in suspected cases of exposure.
